I grew up watching Bill Cosby on the television show I Spy back in the 1960’s. I also heard many of his comedy routines like Noah, Parents, Little Tiny Hairs and Fat Albert. In the early 1970s, I saw Cosby on a talk show and was impressed with his goals. He said he wanted to get a doctorate in education and work on helping to develop teaching programs and curriculum that would make learning more fun. He said that students will learn and retain their education better if it is made enjoyable as opposed to the many boring classes most of us have had. I agreed with him as I learned more in the classes I enjoyed. He said he was using his acting career to finance his education, and that once he accomplished that, he would devote his time to the education field.
In 1971, he received an MA degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, but immediately returned to acting and I never heard another word about his goals to help improve education.
Over the years, I’ve heard a few things from Cosby that caused me some concern, but none as outrageous has his latest statement that he made in the New York Post. Cosby wrote:
“I’m a Christian, but Muslims are misunderstood. Intentionally misunderstood. We should all be more like them. They make sense, especially with their children. There is no other group like the Black Muslims, who put so much effort into teaching children the right things, they don’t smoke, they don’t drink or overindulge in alcohol, they protect their women, they command respect, and what do these other people do? They complain about them, they criticize them. We’d be a better world if we emulated them.”
Excuse me? What planet does Cosby live on or what has he been smoking?
Let’s look at what he said:
“…so much effort into teaching their children the right things…” To begin with, Muslim girls are not allowed to attend school or get an education. Perhaps the most public example is Malala Yousafzai who as a teenager was a public advocate for the education of girls. She had gained recognition worldwide for her fight for female education, yet Muslim extremists shot her in the head when she was only 14 years old. She survived the serious wound and continues her efforts to secure educational rights for Muslim girls worldwide.
I worked with a Muslim man that escaped Iran with his family. He told me that only boys receive an education. If girls were caught learning how to read, they would be beaten and tortured. What were the boys taught in school? They are taught to memorize the Qar’an and that America and Israel are their mortal enemies and should be completely destroyed. Is that what Cosby means when he says they are taught the right things?
“…they protect their women…” Women have no rights and are often treated worse than livestock. Under Islamic sharia law, a woman can be beaten, mutilated and killed by any male relative all for the sake of the family’s honor. Muslim honor killings have even taken place here in the US. In Saudi Arabia, women aren’t even allowed to get a driver’s license or drive a car. The list of cruelty towards Muslim women is miles long.
Is this the kind of protection and treatment of women that Cosby wants us all to emulate?
Fox News had former Congressman Allen West on to comment and reply to Cosby’s insane statement.
Cosby reminds me of President Obama. They both claim to be Christian but defend Muslims and endorse their ways. Islam has sworn to convert or destroy Christians. How can a Christian support that? If Cosby feels so strongly about Muslims and they are doing everything right, then perhaps he need to move to a Muslim country and live with them for a while.
