Hundreds of would be immigrants along the southern border with Mexico are turning to a new ploy to gain access to his country. Instead of trekking miles across open desert and harsh terrain, they are actually showing up at border crossings and reciting the magic words that someone has been teaching them.
When they reach the border crossing stations, they tell the Border Patrol agents that they are claiming asylum in the US because of the dangers presented by the drug cartels. Many of them are saying the same phrase that they have a ‘credible fear’ of the drug cartel. One person told a local news station in Phoenix:
“They are being told if they come across the border, when they come up to the border and they say certain words, they will be allowed into the country. ‘We are being overwhelmed.’”
In one day alone, nearly 200 people trying to enter the country at the Otay border station just south of San Diego, all used the same phrases of ‘We are being overwhelmed’ and that they had a ‘credible fear’ of the drug cartel. This was one day at only one border station. If that trend holds up, that would be 73,000 asylum requests in one year at just one major border station. When you figure in other major border stations in Arizona and Texas, that number could easily increase into the hundreds of thousands of people flooding into the US and they all seem to be repeating the same words.
Before this new ploy began catching on, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said they had received 19,119 requests for asylum as of the end of May. They anticipated receiving as many as 28,600 by the end of the fiscal year, but if the new ploy continues to sweep across the border, the USCIS will easily become inundated with asylum requests.
Reports from leftist organizations are saying their goal is to overwhelm the system with asylum requests. Part of the new trend has been spurred by a group referred to as the Dream 9 who used the claim of credible fear in their attempts to gain asylum in the US. Spanish language news source, La Opiniòn ran an article called ‘The Asylum Becomes a Dream’ (English translation). In their article it read:
“Following the release of nine Dreamers prisoners in Arizona, after a protest at the border, others have taken the path of asylum as a way to solve their deportation.”
“Media reports in San Diego are reporting that ‘hundreds of foreigners are trying to enter the country in the same way’ and even that immigrants are being taught to use key phrases that they can stay in the country.”
“Reports tell of cases in the Port of Entry Otay Mesa, where 199 people have argued a ‘credible fear “to the drug cartels in Mexico.”
“And the validation of Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) of the status of ‘credible fear’, which allowed young people to stay at home and return to their families seems to have generated more of a headache for Immigration.”
Whether the new strategy to gain asylum or flood the system works is yet to be seen, but be assured that it will be attempted by hundreds, probably thousands more. The big question then becomes how does USCIS screen through all of those claiming asylum and what grounds will they make their determination to grant asylum or not. I know if it were up to Obama and Holder, they would have welcome baskets filled with thousands of dollars worth of government benefits and voter registration forms waiting for every one of them at the border. That way there wouldn’t be any system overload and the Democrats would gain thousands of new voters.
