In one of history’s great examples of throwing good money after bad, the Obama Administration is spending titanic amounts of money on “education” and “assistance” for the widely hated Affordable Care Act. The Administration just announced it would blow $67 million on “navigators” to help people sign up for their overpriced coverage, which they had jolly well better do, because otherwise they’ll be hit with the trans-Constitutional tax/penalty for non-compliance.
With less than seven weeks to go before the marketplaces start enrolling people in Obamacare for 2014, more than 100 navigator programs will be on a tight schedule to assemble, train and dispatch workers throughout the 34 states that will have federally run marketplaces. The 16 states that run their own marketplaces fund their own navigator programs.
The budget for these navigators was originally only about $50 million. Where did Health and Human Services get the extra money? Oh, they just looted it from programs “originally targeted for disease prevention efforts.” As long as the bureaucracy gets bigger, who cares about disease prevention? ObamaCare has never been about the health of anything except Big Government.
A group of 13 attorneys general has written a letter to top ObamaCare commissar and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, head of what has now become the most powerful agency on Earth, and said they were worried about the poor training and vetting of these ObamaCare navigators, expressing fears that “navigators wouldn’t undergo proper criminal background checks.”
Calm down, guys, all is well. These taxpayer millions are going to groups including “United Way programs, the Urban League, Mental Health America, the National Hispanic Council on Aging, and various universities and Planned Parenthood groups.”
Whoa, wait a second. Planned Parenthood? Big Abortion? The same organization currently under investigation by the Government Accountability Office after settling fraud complaints against Medicaid, and other government programs, for $4.3 million in Texas? The group that’s already getting half a billion dollars of our money every year, individual conscience be damned?
More details from The Hill:
Three state-based Planned Parenthood affiliates will receive a total of about $655,000 from the federal government to help consumers navigate their insurance options under ObamaCare.
The grants were announced Thursday as the administration prepares a wide effort to educate the public ahead of open enrollment in the insurance exchanges.
Planned Parenthood affiliates based in Iowa, Montana and New Hampshire received awards to participate in the “navigator” program alongside disease groups, universities and Catholic health agencies.
The grants promise to be controversial among Republicans, who object to Planned Parenthood receiving any public funds because many of its clinics provide abortions.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the group’s political arm, was also a strong ally of President Obama in the last election.
Well, it’s a good thing the Internal Revenue Service and other government agencies have been focused on the real threat of political corruption in America: housewives trying to launch grass-roots Tea Party organizations, and pro-life dissidents with unacceptable plans to protest in front of abortion clinics. Remember that? The Coalition for Life of Iowa was told they would have to sign a letter promising not to protest at Planned Parenthood clinics, if they wanted to get their tax-exempt status. Here’s more of what they had to put up, from CNS News:
“On June 22, 2009, IRS Agent Richards sent us additional written requests, as follows: ‘Please explain how all of your activities, including the prayer meetings held outside of Planned Parenthood are considered educational as defined under 501(c)(3). Organizations exempt under 501(c)(3) may present opinions with scientific or medical facts. Please explain in detail the activities at the prayer meetings. Also, please provide the percentage of time your organization spends on prayer groups as compared with the other activities of the organization. Please explain in detail the signs that are being held up outside of Planned Parenthood and explain how they are considered educational.’”
The Coalition for Life of Iowa eventually got legal assistance from the Thomas More Society, which reminded the IRS about that little thing we like to call the Constitution. The IRS dropped all those crazy, oppressive demands and allowed the pro-lifers to have both their tax exempt status and their First Amendment rights, but it was a tough fight.
Meanwhile, the federal government cheerfully acts as a money-laundering operation for Planned Parenthood, stuffing their pockets with millions of tax dollars at every turn. The abortion industry then invests some of that cash in supporting Big Government leftist candidates, who promise to make sure the money keeps coming, no matter what. Democrats even vowed to shut down the entire federal government to protect Planned Parenthood funding.
An awful lot of ObamaCare spending looks like a thinly-veiled effort to pump confiscated taxpayer money into liberal special interest groups. But we’re not supposed to worry about this breathtaking corruption. Republicans who threaten a government shutdown, to choke off the fire hose of tax money Obama and his minions are spraying over the fiery wreckage of the Affordable Care Act, are denounced as extremist nuts… even by certain other Republicans. On the contrary, I remain astounded that any representative from either Party can square this disaster with his or her financial duty to the American people, as guardians of the public treasury, not to mention defenders of our security and individual rights.
