President-elect Donald Trump has met with Martin Luther King III at Trump Tower, in a meeting that King called “very constructive.”
Speaking to reporters, King was asked first about Trump’s weekend tweet about civil rights leader and Democratic Rep. John Lewis in which Trump called him “all talk, no action.” Trump’s tweet was in response to remarks Lewis made in which he said Trump is not a “legitimate” president.
King however, dismissed the controversy over the tweet saying “In the heat of emotion a lot of things get said on both sides.”
“I am, as John Lewis and many others are, a bridge builder. The goal is to bring America together and Americans. We are great nation but we must become a greater nation.”
When pushed again on the tweet, King said “absolutely I would say that John Lewis has demonstrated that he is action” but repeated his previous statement that things get said in the heat of emotion, and said that “at some point we have to move forward” and look at how to lift people out of poverty.
