Atchison County Emergency Management said residents should keep their doors and windows closed, as well as turn off furnaces.

Officials said there was a chemical leak at MGP Ingredients.

The city manager said the leak has been mitigated. It was apparently caused when a delivery to the plant was placed in the wrong tank and caused a reaction.

Authorities have not identified the chemical.

Residents have reported seeing a white fog.

Atchison students have been evacuated to Walmart, which is located at 1920 U.S. 73.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said Kansas Highway 7, U.S. 73 and U.S. 59 highways in Atchison are closed until further notice.
