How Are Americans Feeling About Trump So Far?

President Trump’s approval numbers have been hanging around the low-40s for weeks after a series of intraparty headaches, media-fanned political firestorms, Democrat hyperbole, and several self-made messes. However, since military action usually impacts poll numbers one way or the other, it’s worth taking a moment to see how Trump’s doing after his response to Syria.

Over the weekend, Trump ordered an airstrike on a Syrian military installation after the U.S. determined that Bashar al-Assad’s regime once again used chemical weapons on the Syrian people. While the action did not significantly impact Trump’s overall approval numbers — not great news for Trump, who’s so far tracking well behind most presidents — national polls indicate that a majority of Americans support his decisive response to Syria, and opinion on his handling of foreign policy appears to be moving in the right direction. On the economy, Mr. Trump continues to poll ahead, though by less than he did a month ago. 

Below are the latest results from national polls tracking presidential job approval — including on the economy and foreign policy — opinions on the direction of the country, and congressional approval.  

TRUMP JOB APPROVAL 

According to Real Clear Politics’ average of the key national polls, Trump finds himself 10.2 points in the red by average, with a majority disapproving: 42.1 percent approval, 52.3 percent disapproval. Not a single major poll gives him a positive split. One month ago, Trump’s numbers were slightly better, with an overall spread of -6 points.
