Huffington Post editor’s tweet sparks FBI investigation

Daniel Halper,

The FBI is investigating a Huffington Post scribe for joking about “destroying Trump ballots” at a Washington, DC, voting site, the reporter claimed.

Nick Baumann said it all began with a joke that the feds didn’t find particularly amusing.

On Oct. 31, 2016, Baumann tweeted: “I love my job working at a voting site in washington dc destroying trump ballots.”

The next day, he said his tweet was “a joking reference” to an internet conspiracy of a man claiming to be tearing up Trump ballots.

Days later, on Nov. 4, Baumann, a senior enterprise editor for the site, said he got a call from the FBI — but, thinking it was a crank call, he never called back.

On Dec. 5, the FBI special agent tried again.

“The reason I’m calling is — I can’t give you too many details over the phone — we recently received some complaints regarding some online postings that were made. I don’t know if you know what that’s in reference to, but would you be willing to sit down with us for a couple minutes tomorrow morning, by chance?” the agent asked, according to Baumann.

“I know this may sound ridiculous, but when we receive complaints, we have to follow them up, no matter what,” the federal agent added.

The meeting hasn’t taken place. But, Baumann writes, “The investigation is ongoing.”
