Protest Planned at Colorado GOP Headquarters Over Election Cancellation
Group urges voters to assemble at GOP headquarters on Friday.
A protest has been planned for Friday at the Colorado GOP headquarters following news that all of the state’s delegates were awarded to Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz without say from voters.
“The Colorado Republican Party shamefully silenced its voters this election season,” read the details of an upcoming event by the Colorado Votes Matter group.
“We demand that Colorado give the power to vote in the Presidential Primary to the voters. We will exercise our right to assemble and peacefully protest the corruption of the Colorado GOP and disenfranchisement that we the voters have suffered.”
The group is calling for voters to assemble Friday from 3PM to 6PM MDT at the Colorado Republican Party Headquarters at 5950 S. Willow Drive, Greenwood Village, CO 80111.
Over the weekend, Cruz swept the state’s 13 remaining delegates bringing his Colorado total to 34.
A rule change quietly passed last August by Colorado Republicans eliminated its public nomination process and made it so state delegates “support the candidate that wins the caucus vote” at the party’s state convention, according to The Denver Post.
On Sunday, GOP frontrunner Donald Trump issued scathing rebukes of the process, saying “the people of Colorado had their vote taken away from them by the phony politicians.”
Over the weekend, GOP voters in Colorado also expressed outrage with one man taking to Youtube to burn his Republican voter registration form in protest of the state’s results.
“Republican party take note,” the man says as he sets fire to his form in his kitchen. “I think you’re going to see a whole lot more of these. I’ve been a Republican all my life, but I will never be a Republican again.”
After the decision, the Colorado GOP poured gas on the fire when it tweeted, “We did it. #NeverTrump,” before deleting it, promising to launch an investigation into the person behind the message.
“The last tweet was the result of unauthorized access to our account and in no way represents the opinion of the party. We are investigating,” the party wrote in a follow up tweet.
