Bad News for Monsanto Seralini GMO Study Gets New Light

Wake Up World – by Jack Adam Weber

Monsanto has just kicked itself in the mouth. Soon, we hope, it will have no teeth with which to chew its toxic products!

The now famous “Seralini study”, as it is commonly referred to, which drew massive attention worldwide for its depiction of horrific tumors in rats fed Monsanto’s GMO corn, has become even more famous. And it packs an even stronger punch than before. Why? Because this study, which was retracted from the scientific literature, has been determined to have been wrongfully retracted.

The Seralini study was withdrawn from the peer–reviewed literature of the scientific community last year under heavy pressure from pro-biotech factions. The retraction of this peer-reviewed study created an outrage among scientists worldwide, as well as concerned people everywhere. Now, the finding of the Seralini study, while powerful upon its first release to the public, has been reinstated after furtherintense peer review which determined the study to be valid and accurate.

This verdict has been the hope of millions who have serious reservations about GMO products (a.k.a. the rest of sane humanity). This extra examination will bolster the Seralini study to new status and prominence, strengthening the evidence of GMO and RoundUp harm. It is fantastic news for all of us who are concerned and outraged by the toxic and wanton proliferation of GMO foodstuffs (let’s not call it food, please) worldwide.

And for good reason. The Steralini study was the longest and most comprehensive study of the effects of GMO corn and its toxic side-kick RoundUp undertaken. It was certainly longer than the shabby three-month trials that Monsanto and friends get away with in order to “prove” the safety of their frankenfoods, which they are now allowed to conduct of their own recognizance. According to theOrganic Consumer’s Association:

Genetically engineered (GE) foods have never been safety tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), thanks to a 20-year-old policy that says it’s up to the biotech companies to determine the safety of genetically engineered (GE) foods. So while all other developed countries require safety testing for GE plants, the government agency in charge of protecting U.S. citizens lets biotech companies, who stand to make billions in profits from GE foods, conduct their own “voluntary safety consultations”.

According to the Seralini website, the study…

… found severe liver and kidney damage and hormonal disturbances in rats fed the GM maize and low levels of Roundup that are below those permitted in drinking water in the EU. Toxic effects were found from the GM maize tested alone, as well as from Roundup tested alone and together with the maize. Additional unexpected findings were higher rates of large tumors and mortality in most treatment groups.

Criticism of the Seralini study has been rebutted by many, including the Seralini group itself. Much of the criticism hinged on a distortion (or more unlikely, plain ignorance) of the objectives of the study, which was a toxicological study of both the Franken-corn and Round-Up, the herbicide ubiquitously used on the corn. The study was criticized as a poorly designed cancer study, but it was never intended as a cancer study. According to the GMOSeralini website:

The critics say that Séralini used too few rats of a strain prone to tumours, so the tumours seen may have occurred spontaneously and no conclusions can be drawn. But Séralini’s study was a chronic toxicity study, not a carcinogenicity study. The increase in tumour incidence was a surprise outcome. The logical response to the findings is not to dismiss them but to follow up with a full-scale carcinogenicity study on GM NK603 maize and Roundup.

Here as some comments by other scientists (two anonymous, likely to protect their welfare):

“Few studies would survive such intensive scrutiny by fellow scientists. The republication of the study after three expert reviews is a testament to its rigour, as well as to the integrity of the researchers.” — Dr Michael Antoniou

“If anyone still doubts the quality of this study, they should simply read the republished paper. The science speaks for itself.”

“This study has arguably prevailed through the most comprehensive and independent review process to which any scientific study on GMOs has ever been subjected.”

No doubt, the biotech talking heads, who wobble but never seem to fall down, will come back to try to refute this validity of this re-publication. Let them. The science now shouts for itself And there will be more…until one day, we do away with these pests once and for all.

Next time you are in a debate with a pro-GMO shill or a GMO advocate, share with them this good news!

It’s well-known that a broken bone that heals becomes stronger than prior to its breaking. Apparently the same holds true in the world of broken science as well. Long-live the now stronger Seralini study and its encouragement for even further GMO testing!

We will prevail. Aho!
