Rand Paul Trying to ‘Persuade’ His Wife to Let Him Run for President in 2016

At the very end of a question and answer session following a speech he gave at the Detroit Economic Club on Friday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) let slip some hints about his plans for 2016. The final question came from a student, but as the questioner said it was also what “everyone in the audience wants to know”: “What are you plans for running for president in 2016?”

“Where’s my cellphone? Can I call my wife?” Paul joked as he attempted to deflect the inquiry. “There’s two votes in my family, and my wife has both of them, and both are no votes right now.” However, Paul did say that he would try to “persuade” his wife to change her mind by next year, something he said would prove he’s an “able politician.”

As the Washington Post’s Aaron Blake noted, Kelly Paul expressed her strong opinions on the matter in a recent Vogue profile. “In this day and age it’s mostly about character assassination,” she said. “When I think of the tens of millions of dollars in opposition research that they’d be aiming right at us and our family—that’s what it’s about.”
